Match the outfit to the method, not the boat
Australian offshore anglers generally need up to three outfits, and rarely all at once. A 15–24 kg overhead or heavy spin outfit handles reef bottom fishing and light game trolling. A 20–30 lb spin outfit with a fast retrieve covers kingfish, mackerel and school tuna on lures and live bait. A dedicated deep-drop outfit — usually electric or a very low-geared overhead — is only worth buying if you actually fish 200 m-plus water off places like Bermagui or Portland.
Buying a single 24 kg game outfit as a first offshore purchase is usually the wrong call. It is far too heavy for the snapper, pearl perch and mackerel that make up most Australian offshore catches, and too light for a serious marlin campaign.
