The learning curve is real but short. Set the spool tension so the lure falls slowly, start with the magnetic brake high, and you will be casting cleanly within a session.
If you fish barramundi in salt or brackish water, buy a reel with corrosion-resistant bearings and rinse it after every trip. Freshwater-only reels will corrode quickly in the tropics.
A 6.x:1 ratio is the all-round choice. Go 7+ for fast lure work and 5.x for deep cranking or big swimbaits.
Baitcasters win for accuracy around structure and fishing on the drop. Spin outfits are easier for very light lures under 5 g.
