Overview
Southern rock lobster inhabit rocky reef from central New South Wales around to Western Australia, including Tasmania where they grow largest.
Recreational take is tightly regulated with licences, size limits, pot limits and seasonal closures that differ in every state.
They are slow growing and long lived, which is why the size and berried-female rules matter.
Where to find them
- ▸Rocky reef ledges and caves in 5–40 m.
- ▸Kelp-covered boulder ground.
- ▸Deep reef in exposed southern waters.
- ▸Reef edges adjacent to sand in sheltered bays.
Tackle
- ▸Gear: licensed pots or dive gear with a snare, plus a legal measure.
- ▸Rope and floats rated for depth and swell.
- ▸Bait: fish frames and oily heads.
Tips from the water
- ▸Hold a current state licence and know your season dates before setting a pot.
- ▸Return all berried (egg-carrying) females immediately.
- ▸Set pots against reef edges and lift them at first light.
