Overview
Spanish mackerel are pelagic hunters that follow bait aggregations along reef edges, headlands and shoals.
They strike hard and fast, and a single fish can strip 100 m of line before you touch the reel. Light drag settings and a smooth reel matter.
Large specimens in some tropical regions can carry ciguatera risk; check local advice before eating big fish from affected areas.
Where to find them
- ▸Reef edges and shoals with strong current.
- ▸Bait balls and working birds in open water.
- ▸Headlands and islands during winter runs.
Tackle
- ▸Rod: 15–24 kg trolling outfit or PE 4–6 spin rod.
- ▸Line: 30–60 lb braid or mono with single-strand wire trace.
- ▸Lures and baits: swimming garfish, wolf herring, 60–120 g metal slugs, bibbed minnows.

- ▸Always use wire when targeting them deliberately.
- ▸Troll baits at 4–6 knots and stagger your spread across the current line.
