Straight mono still makes sense for bait fishing, rock fishing and anywhere stretch is an advantage.
The standard modern estuary outfit is 6–10 lb braid with a 6–12 lb fluorocarbon leader. That combination covers bream, flathead, whiting and most bay fishing.
Buy mid-price braid and good fluorocarbon leader. Leader is the metre the fish sees and the part that rubs on rocks — it is where quality pays. Mainline braid from any major brand at the right diameter fishes almost identically.
Mono is cheaper and more forgiving of knots and abrasion. Move to braid with a fluorocarbon leader once you are casting lures regularly.
