Jungle Perch

Kuhlia rupestris · also known as JPs

A spectacular surface-feeding native of coastal Queensland rainforest streams — sight fishing at its finest.

Overview

Jungle perch live in clear, fast coastal streams from around Rockhampton north, holding in pools below rapids and waterfalls.

They need access to saltwater to complete their life cycle, so instream barriers have removed them from many southern catchments.

They hit surface lures with reckless aggression and are one of the great light-tackle experiences in Australia.

Where to find them

  • Rainforest stream pools below rapids and cascades.
  • Undercut banks and shaded log jams in clear water.
  • Tailouts where current pushes food through.
  • Coastal streams with unobstructed access to the sea.

Tackle

  • Rod: 1–3 kg spin, 6–7 ft.
  • Reel: 1000–2500 spin.
  • Line: 8 lb braid with 10 lb fluorocarbon leader.
  • Terminal: small poppers, 40 mm hard-bodies, single hooks preferred.

Tips from the water

  • Approach quietly and stay low — they spook instantly in clear water.
  • Swap trebles for singles to make release easy.
  • Fish in bright light; they hunt by sight.

Regulations

Protected in some catchments and catch-and-release only in others. Check Queensland rules for the specific stream.
