Overview

Silver perch were once abundant throughout the Murray-Darling but river regulation and barriers have collapsed the wild population.

They are strong swimmers that historically migrated hundreds of kilometres to spawn — something weirs largely prevent today.

Stocked impoundments now provide most recreational encounters, and they fight well above their weight on light gear.

Where to find them

  • Stocked impoundments across NSW and southern QLD.
  • Open water where they school over deeper flats.
  • Weed edges and inflow areas in warm weather.
  • Below weirs in the Murray-Darling where fish still congregate.

Tackle

  • Rod: 2–4 kg light spin.
  • Reel: 2500 spin.
  • Line: 8–12 lb braid with 10 lb fluorocarbon leader.
  • Terminal: small blades, 2" plastics, or worms on a size 4 hook.

Tips from the water

  • Know the rules — wild fish must be returned in most states.
  • They school, so where you find one there are usually more.
  • Small vibes worked over open flats are the most effective lure.

Regulations

Wild silver perch are listed as critically endangered and must be released in most jurisdictions. Stocked impoundment fish may be taken where permitted.
