Overview
Pearl perch have a very restricted range, holding on deep rubble and reef edges off southern Queensland and northern New South Wales.
They school in modest numbers on specific patches of hard ground and are highly valued, which means known marks receive heavy pressure.
Barotrauma is a real issue at the depths they live in, so release weights matter.
Where to find them
- ▸Deep reef and rubble patches in 50–100 m.
- ▸Edges of larger reef systems rather than the peaks.
- ▸Gravel bottom adjacent to hard reef.
- ▸Deeper marks in winter, shallower in spring.
Tackle
- ▸Rod: 6'6" boat rod rated 8–15 kg.
- ▸Line: 30–50 lb braid with 40–60 lb leader.
- ▸Rig: paternoster with 5/0 circles, squid or pilchard baits; 5–7" plastics on 2–4 oz heads.
Tips from the water
- ▸Fish the tide change — bites shut off in fast current.
- ▸Drop plastics and work them just above the bottom.
- ▸Always carry a release weight for undersize or excess fish.
