Overview
Slimy mackerel form dense schools over inshore reef and open water and are the go-to live bait for kingfish, marlin and mulloway.
They mark clearly on a sounder as thick clouds and come up readily behind a berley trail.
Eaten fresh and iced immediately, slimies are excellent grilled or smoked despite their reputation.
Where to find them
- ▸Inshore reef in 15–40 m.
- ▸Around berley trails on open water.
- ▸Harbour entrances in winter.
- ▸Under working birds offshore.
Tackle
- ▸Rod: light 6'6" spin.
- ▸Line: 10–15 lb braid.
- ▸Rig: sabiki jig, or size 8 hook with a small bait strip.
Tips from the water
- ▸Handle with wet hands and drop them straight into the live well.
- ▸Do not overload the tank — slimies die fast when crowded.
- ▸Butterflied slimies are outstanding snapper bait.
