Overview
Redfin school tightly around submerged timber, weed beds and drop-offs in lakes and slow rivers.
Once you find one, you have found dozens — mark the school and work it thoroughly before moving.
As a noxious species they must not be released alive; taking a feed helps native fish populations.
Where to find them
- ▸Standing timber in impoundments.
- ▸Weed edges and drop-offs in 3–10 m.
- ▸Slow river holes with structure.
Tackle
- ▸Rod: 7' light spin rated 2–4 kg.
- ▸Line: 8–10 lb braid with 8–10 lb leader.
- ▸Lures: 2" plastics, small blades and 40 mm lipless crankbaits.
Tips from the water
- ▸Work vertically over marked schools with blades.
- ▸Never release live redfin or move them between waterways.
- ▸Fillet and skin them — the flesh is white, firm and excellent.

Redfin are a declared noxious pest species in most states — it is illegal to return them to the water alive or transport them live.
