Silver Trevally

Pseudocaranx georgianus · also known as Skippy, Blurter

Pound for pound one of the hardest-pulling southern estuary fish, and far more accessible than most anglers realise.

Overview

Silver trevally school hard around bridge pylons, breakwalls, reefs and washy headlands, moving with the tide rather than holding still.

A steady berley trail turns a quiet session into a hectic one — they respond to berley faster than almost any other southern species.

They fight well above their weight, running in tight circles and using the current relentlessly.

Where to find them

  • Bridge pylons and breakwall corners in tidal estuaries.
  • Washy headland rock ledges on a rising swell.
  • Inshore reef in 10–30 m holding bait.

Tackle

  • Rod: 7' light spin rated 3–5 kg.
  • Line: 10–15 lb braid with 10–16 lb fluorocarbon leader.
  • Lures and baits: 2–3" plastics, 20–40 g slices, peeled prawn and cut pilchard.

Tips from the water

  • Berley constantly and in small amounts to hold the school.
  • Drop leader size when the bite goes quiet — trevally are leader shy in clear water.
  • Bleed immediately; the eating quality improves dramatically.

Regulations

Minimum legal lengths and bag limits apply in most southern states.
