Overview
Estuary perch school in the brackish middle reaches of coastal rivers, holding around snags, bridge pylons and rock walls.
They feed most confidently in low light and are notoriously hard to tempt under bright sun.
Because they aggregate to spawn, released fish and closed-season compliance matter more than for most estuary species.
Where to find them
- ▸Snag piles and fallen timber in brackish river reaches.
- ▸Bridge pylons and lit wharf edges after dark.
- ▸Rock walls at the entrance to coastal lakes.
Tackle
- ▸Rod: 7' light spin rated 2–5 kg.
- ▸Line: 8–12 lb braid with 10–14 lb fluorocarbon leader.
- ▸Lures: 40–60 mm vibes, blades, 2.5" plastics and small surface walkers.
Tips from the water
- ▸Fish the shadow line of lit structure, not the light itself.
- ▸Hop vibes slowly along the bottom in winter.
- ▸Release spawning-condition fish quickly and quietly.
