South-east Queensland packs an unusual variety into a short drive: bay snapper, river threadfin, flats whiting and mangrove jack all sit within an hour of the Brisbane CBD.

Bribie, Pumicestone and the Gold Coast Broadwater
The Pumicestone Passage is a sheltered, shallow system that fishes beautifully for whiting on surface lures over the run-in tide, plus flathead along the drop-offs.
The Gold Coast Broadwater, an hour south, offers the same species mix with more structure — bridges, pontoons and the seaway for pelagics and mulloway.
Both systems are shallow and tide-driven, so plan around the tide first and the time of day second.
