Queenfish hunt in packs along current lines, headland washes and tidal flats, herding bait against structure.
They are the ideal surface-lure target: aggressive, visible and prone to repeated strikes when missed.
Poor eating but outstanding sport, which makes them a natural catch-and-release species.
Where to find them
- ▸Tidal flats and creek mouths on the run-out.
- ▸Headland washes and rock bars with current.
- ▸Bait schools pushed to the surface offshore.
Tackle
- ▸Rod: 7'–8' spin rated 8–15 kg.
- ▸Line: 30–50 lb braid with 60–80 lb leader.
- ▸Lures: 100–140 mm stickbaits, poppers and 40–60 g slices.
Tips from the water
- ▸Keep the lure moving fast — hesitation kills the bite.
- ▸Bow the rod on jumps to avoid pulled hooks.
- ▸Handle with wet hands and release quickly; they exhaust themselves fighting.
