Overview

Spangled emperor move onto shallow reef flats on the rising tide to crush crabs and shellfish, then drop back to deeper ledges as water falls.

They are one of the few premium tropical reef species regularly caught land-based, which makes them a favourite along the WA coast.

Crustacean baits out-fish fish flesh most days — their teeth are built for crushing shell.

Where to find them

  • Shallow coral and limestone flats on the run-in tide.
  • Beach gutters adjacent to reef in the north-west.
  • Deeper ledges and lumps in 20–40 m during the day.

Tackle

  • Rod: 8–15 kg spin, or a 12' beach rod for land-based work.
  • Line: 20–50 lb braid with 40–60 lb leader.
  • Baits: crab, prawn, squid and octopus on 4/0–6/0 hooks.

Tips from the water

  • Fish the last of the run-in over shallow reef at dusk.
  • Keep leader long — spangos rub hard against coral.
  • Bleed and ice immediately; they are excellent eating when handled well.

Regulations

Minimum legal lengths and bag limits vary by state and bioregion.
