Overview
Red emperor hold over rubble ground and reef edges rather than the hard coral itself, often in loose schools of similar-sized fish.
Larger fish sit slightly off the main structure, which is why drifting baits back down-current out-produces dropping straight down.
Their initial run is brutal but short. Stop that first surge and the fight is largely won.
Where to find them
- ▸Rubble ground and gravel patches adjacent to coral reef.
- ▸Deep shoals and isolated bommies in 40–80 m.
- ▸Current lines pushing bait over structure.
Tackle
- ▸Rod: heavy 24 kg overhead or PE 5–8 jig rod.
- ▸Line: 60–100 lb braid with 100 lb leader.
- ▸Baits and lures: whole squid, mullet fillet, 7"–10" soft plastics on heavy jig heads.
Tips from the water
- ▸Set drag heavy and lift immediately on the bite.
- ▸Use release weights in deep water — barotrauma is guaranteed past 40 m.
- ▸Mark productive rubble patches; they hold fish season after season.
