Overview
Australian salmon travel in large schools that push bait against beaches and headlands, often visible as dark patches under diving birds.
They are one of the most accessible sportfish in the country: a rod, a bag of metal slugs and a beach gutter is all you need.
Their dark flesh is best bled and iced straight away, or used as premium bait for mulloway and sharks.
Where to find them
- ▸Beach gutters and corners near rock outcrops.
- ▸Ocean rock platforms with white water.
- ▸Bay entrances where bait concentrates.
Tackle
- ▸Rod: 8'–10' spin rod rated 4–8 kg.
- ▸Line: 15–30 lb braid with 20–30 lb leader.
- ▸Lures and baits: 20–60 g metal slugs, surface poppers, ganged pilchards.
Tips from the water
- ▸Look for birds — they mark salmon schools better than any sounder.
- ▸Retrieve slugs fast and high; salmon will chase to the shore break.
