Overview
Tailor hunt in packs and herd baitfish against the shore, which is why beach gutters and rock ledges produce so consistently during the runs.
Their teeth demand wire or heavy mono trace when using bait; lure anglers often accept the occasional bite-off in exchange for more strikes.
Big tailor, known as greenbacks, run the Queensland and WA coasts in winter and are prized by beach anglers.
Where to find them
- ▸Deep beach gutters with white water at either end.
- ▸Rock ledges with deep water access.
- ▸Estuary mouths and bar entrances on the run-out.
Tackle
- ▸Rod: 9'–12' beach rod, or 8' spin rod for estuary work.
- ▸Line: 20–40 lb braid or 15–20 lb mono with heavy trace.
- ▸Lures and baits: 20–60 g metal slugs, ganged pilchards, surface poppers.
Tips from the water
- ▸Retrieve metals fast — tailor rarely refuse speed.
- ▸Bleed and ice fish immediately; tailor spoil faster than almost any other species.
