Overview
Bronze whalers patrol surf gutters, headlands and inshore reef, following salmon and mullet schools along the coast.
They are the primary target of land-based shark anglers on southern beaches and offer long, powerful runs from the sand.
Handling requires planning: unhook in the shallows, keep hands clear and release the fish quickly.
Where to find them
- ▸Deep surf gutters on exposed beaches.
- ▸Headlands with adjacent deep water.
- ▸Inshore reef holding salmon schools.
- ▸Estuary mouths on a run-out tide.
Tackle
- ▸Rod: 13'–15' heavy surf rod or 24 kg boat outfit.
- ▸Line: 50–80 lb braid or mono with 200 lb mono trace and a short wire bite section.
- ▸Bait: whole salmon, mullet or tuna head on 10/0 circle hooks.
Tips from the water
- ▸Use a circle hook so the fish is jaw-hooked and easy to release.
- ▸Never drag a shark up dry sand — unhook in the wash.
- ▸Check state regulations; several shark species are fully protected.
