Overview
Silver drummer are the largest of the drummers and feed largely on green weed torn from the rocks by swell.
They are among the strongest fish available to land-based anglers and are usually released, as the flesh has a strong iodine taste.
Where they school, the fishing is fast and heavy tackle is mandatory.
Where to find them
- ▸Deep gutters against exposed rock platforms.
- ▸Weed-covered ledges washed by consistent swell.
- ▸Ocean-facing breakwalls.
- ▸Bommie edges within casting range of the platform.
Tackle
- ▸Rod: 12' heavy rock rod.
- ▸Line: 30 lb mono straight through.
- ▸Rig: unweighted green weed or bread on a 2/0 hook.
Tips from the water
- ▸Collect fresh green weed from the same platform you are fishing.
- ▸Berley with bread mixed with sand so it sinks in the wash.
- ▸Expect to lose fish; that is part of drummer fishing.
Regulations
