Overview
Sea sweep school in the wash off southern rock platforms and around inshore reef, feeding on weed, crustaceans and anything drifting in a berley trail.
They are frequently the first fish to arrive when you start berleying and can be caught continuously for hours.
Best eaten fresh; the flesh is soft and does not keep well.
Where to find them
- ▸Rock platform wash zones on exposed coast.
- ▸Inshore reef and bommies in 5–15 m.
- ▸Jetty pylons in deep southern harbours.
- ▸Kelp edges along rocky headlands.
Tackle
- ▸Rod: 9'–11' light rock or beach rod.
- ▸Line: 12–20 lb mono with 12 lb leader.
- ▸Rig: small running sinker or float, size 4–1 hooks, prawn, squid or bread.
Tips from the water
- ▸Keep a steady berley trail — sweep hold as long as the food does.
- ▸Use a float to keep baits above the reef.
- ▸Bleed and ice for the best table result.
