Overview
Rock blackfish, or drummer, live in the white water directly against the rocks, feeding on weed, cunjevoi and crabs.
They fight by diving straight into the nearest cave and cutting the line on barnacle-encrusted rock, so heavy line and a locked drag are the norm.
They are best fished on a big, safe swell, which means rock safety gear is not optional.
Where to find them
- ▸White water directly against rock platforms.
- ▸Deep gutters between bommies.
- ▸Cunjevoi-covered ledges on exposed points.
- ▸Harbour rock walls with heavy surge.
Tackle
- ▸Rod: 10'–12' heavy rock rod rated 6–10 kg.
- ▸Line: 20–30 lb mono straight through or braid with 30–40 lb leader.
- ▸Rig: minimal weight, size 1/0 suicide hook, bread or peeled prawn.
Tips from the water
- ▸Berley constantly with bread and chopped cunjevoi to bring them up in the wash.
- ▸Set the drag hard — you cannot let them run.
- ▸Never turn your back on the ocean; wear a life jacket and cleats.
